As you may know by now, the raw edges of most stretch knits don’t fray so leaving the edges unfinished is common when sewing knits. . However if you desire a neat clean finish there are several ways to go about it. In this tutorial I show you my favorite way to finish a sleeve hem on a knit garment. Follow to learn how.
MATERIALS & TOOLS NEEDED:
OLFA 24 X 36 SELF HEALING ROTARY MAT
OLFA 45 mm Rotary Cutter
OLFA 1 X12 Frosted Acrylic Ruler
OLFA 5 INCH SERRATED EDGE STAINLESS STEEL SCISSORS
Clips/Pins
*This hem can be used on sleeves, skirts and pant edges. I used it on the sleeve for Simplicity pattern S9644.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Using your OLFA ruler mark your fold line ½ inch from the raw edge on the wrong side.
- With right sides together and raw edges lined up,pin and stitch you sleeve seam.
(My sleeve seam has a slit so I will stop it a few inches from the hem line)
- Press raw edge under on the fold line and pin them in place.
- Using the overcast stitch or zig zag stitch, sew close to the raw edge on the the front side of the sleeve catching the raw edge of the folded hem underneath
- To finish a slit on your hem check out my previous tutorial here https://olfa.com/blogs/craft/how-to-add-pant-slits
You can also use the overcast stitch or zig zag stitch to finish your slit.
