Tools needed:

OLFA RM-SG-01 18" x 24" Green Double-Sided, Self-Healing Rotary Mat

OLFA QR-6x24 6”x24” Frosted Acrylic Ruler

OLFA QR-6S 6 1/2" Square Frosted Acrylic Ruler

Before cutting CONSIDERATIONS:

This project is based on your body measurements. The example in this tutorial is for an XL size.

To adapt it to your body size, you will have to measure your hips circumference and add 10” (5 inches to each side of the body).

Measure the height of the skirt from below the breast to the desired length. In this example a knee height is presented.

For the XL size, the patchwork for the skirt will measure 60” x 25” finished, using 5” finished squares.

Add or remove rows vertically or horizontally depending on your size and skirt length.

To calculate from this tutorial example, consider cutting 5 1/2" unfinished size squares (5” finished size as mentioned previously) and calculate the rows horizontally + vertically:

12 x 5 grid = (60) 5 1/2” squares to be cut.

12 vertical rows of 5” finished squares = 60”

5 horizontal rows of 5” finished squares = 25”

*The measurement of the skirt will be 60” around the body and 25” length from below the breast to the knee.

Cutting instructions for XL size example, 12 x 5 grid:

Cut (6) 5 1/2" squares from 10 FQ.

Or cut a total of (60) 5 1/2" squares from any fabrics you plan to use.

Sew the patchwork:

With a 12 x 5 grid, organize and piece the patchwork with all (60) squares using 1/4” seam allowance.

Press squares on the (12) vertical rows to opposite sides so the seams nest, and then press the rows seams open when sewn together to reduce seam bulk.

Fold the two vertical (shorter) ends with right sides touching and wrong side facing out and sew using ¼” seam allowance.

From fabric J, cut (1) rectangle measuring 60 1/2" x 25 1/2" for the lining. Press well.

Prepare the lining, fold the two short ends with right sides touching and wrong side facing out and sew using ¼” seam allowance as before for the patchwork.

With right sides touching, join both the patchwork and lining skirt pieces and clip one of the edges all around. Sew using 1/4” seam allowance.

Turn the right side out and press.

Topstitch twice, with first seam 1/8” far from the edge and second seam ¼” far from the edge.

On the open side (raw edge), sew all around both layers together to hold.

Cut the tee about 2 inches below the breast line.

Using the widest stitch length on your sewing machine, sew a line 1” far from the side seams on each side of the skirt (front and back) below the raw edge by 1/4" distance, leave a long thread tail on each side of each seam to gather.

Pull the thread on each side after sewing to gather just enough to fit the tee circumference.

With right sides of both the skirt and tee touching, align and clip both parts together after gathering the skirt raw edge.

Sew using a 3/8” seam allowance. Pull the loose threads. Zig zag or serge the seams to finish.

Press the seams towards the tee.

Turn the dress to the right side and give it a good press. You’re all done!
