DIY Fall Decor: Make a Crochet Wreath with Fabric Pumpkins

Bring a little handmade touch to your home this fall with a cozy wreath made almost entirely from things you may already have at home. In this tutorial, I’m using recycled cardboard to create the wreath base, then adding crocheted yarn, fluffy pompoms, and adorable fabric pumpkins for a charming, handmade vibe.

I love how this project combines simple materials and different textures to create something that feels perfectly suited for the season! It’s also a wonderful way to give cardboard that you might otherwise discard a second life, while using yarn to create a beautiful piece of decor that you can enjoy year after year.

So grab your favorite autumn-colored fabric scraps, yarn and a piece of cardboard, and let’s make a cozy craft from scratch! 🥰

Tools & Supplies Needed

• OLFA FCM-17x24 17" x 24" Folding Cutting Mat or FCM-12x17 12" x 17" Folding Cutting Mat

• OLFA QR-1x12 1" x 12" Frosted Acrylic Ruler

• OLFA 9mm Stainless-Steel Graphics Knife with 30-Degree Precision Blade | SAC-1

• OLFA 28mm Rotary Cutter

• OLFA 7-Inch SCS-2 Serrated-Edge Stainless Steel Scissors

• OLFA CMP-3 Rotary Circle Cutter

• Assorted fall-patterned fabric

• Brown felt

• Olive green felt

• Recycled cardboard (at least two 15-inch square pieces)

• Embroidery floss (coordinating colors to match the fabric patterns; used: Aurifil)

• Beige/off-white yarn, enough to cover the wreath (approximately 45 yards used)

• Assorted green, orange and brown yarn for making pompoms

• Pompom maker, 2 small sizes (used: Clover brand)

• Craft polyester fiberfill

• Needle and Pins

• Crochet hook

• Hot glue gun

• Pencil

• Ribbon (approximately 35”)

• Copy paper (for the templates)

• Double-sided adhesive tape & regular tape

Instructions

- For this project, you can certainly buy a wreath base from a craft store, such as a foam or MDF base, but I wanted to make this one completely from scratch using recycled cardboard, so you can create the wreath without having to spend extra money on a base. 😉 Print the template twice, to size. Using your OLFA scissors, cut out all four parts, leaving tabs to assemble the circle.

- Using double-sided adhesive tape, assemble the template into a circle.

- With a pencil, trace the template onto the cardboard twice.

- Using your OLFA Graphics Knife, carefully freehand-cut the two circles you just traced. Tip: Rotate the cardboard while you’re cutting to make it easier, more precise, and more ergonomic.

This is what you should have:

- Now, using double-sided adhesive tape, attach both circles together to create a thicker base for your wreath.

- Let’s start crocheting the wreath! Begin by wrapping the yarn around the ring, then pull a loop through with the crochet hook, following the simple steps shown in the video below:

For this wreath, I used approximately 46 yards of yarn. This is the final result of the crocheting step (with Gema 🐈⬛ supervising my work, haha):

- Now let’s make the mini fabric pumpkins: using your OLFA Circle Cutter, cut 6" circles from the fabric.

- Using a needle and 6-strand embroidery floss in a color that coordinates with the fabric, make running stitches around the entire circumference of the circle. For each pumpkin, I used approximately 35–40 inches of floss.

- Now, pull the floss to form a “ball” shape. Do not cut the excess floss yet, set it aside.

- Fill the fabric ball with fiberfill stuffing until it forms a very round and firm shape. Then, make a knot to secure everything inside.

- Using the remaining floss hanging from the ball, start shaping the pumpkin, as shown in the video below:

- To make the pumpkin stem, use your OLFA ruler and rotary cutter to cut a 2" strip of brown felt.

- Then, using hot glue, roll the strip to form a stem approximately 1/2" in diameter. Secure with hot glue and trim away any excess with OLFA scissors.

- Using OLFA scissors, cut approximately 3/4" pieces for the stems.

- Cut a few leaf shapes from the olive green felt, then attach the leaves and stem to the top of each pumpkin using hot glue.

- For the pompoms, there are many affordable pompom makers available nowadays, so you can choose whichever one you like best! They are simple and fun to use, and make creating perfectly shaped pompoms so much easier.

- Make as many fabric pumpkins and pompoms as you’d like for your wreath, then start assembling everything, securing each piece with hot glue. Tip: When arranging the wreath, I like to use pins to temporarily position the pompoms. This way, they stay in place while you experiment with the arrangement and decide where you want each piece to go.
