Tools needed:
OLFA RTY-2CYEL/ST-01 Fabric Cutting Kit, Yellow
OLFA QR-6S 6 1/2" Square Frosted Acrylic Ruler
OLFA QR-6x24 6" x 24" Frosted Acrylic Ruler
Cutting instructions:
For each of the (8) colors, cut:
(2) 5 1/2" x WOF strips.
Sub-cut:
C1 – C4 = (13) 5 1/2"squares.
C5 – C8 = (12) 5 1/2"squares.
(The total of squares is 100)
Piece the (10) rows according to the chart below, or in any random arrangement you prefer.
To make this process easier, I recommend stacking the squares that forms the rows in order from bottom to top. Then sew the pairs of 1+2 / 3+4 / 5+6 / 7+8 / 9+10 squares of each row, then 1+2 and 3+4 / 5+6 and 7+8 of each row, then 1+2+3+4 and 5+6+7+8 and finally 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 and 9+10 of each row.
Press the rows’ seams to opposite sides and sew as you go, or press them all at once alternating the sides the seams are pressed to and stacking the rows in order before sewing them together.
Press the row seams open.
After piecing the rows, and sewing them together the patchwork top is ready to shape and sew to form a shawl.
Fold the quilt top in half diagonally with right sides touching. Two opposite corners are now together to be clipped as well as along the entire bottom and side edges.
Sew along the straight (bottom and side) edges only, backstitch in the beginning and end of the seams and leave a 5in opening to turn.
Turn the shawl right side out and press well, making sure to carefully poke the corners out and press the edges as well as the diagonal flat.
Topstitch along the entire triangle edge to finish.
You’re all done! There are multiple ways of wearing it!
Also, if you’re up to a fun quilt adventure, this is a perfect project to hand quilt, but in this tutorial no quilting was added as the full triangle edge was topstitched the layers are secure together.
