Tools needed:

OLFA 18"x24" Double-Sided Self-Healing Rotary Mat | RM-SG-01

OLFA 45mm Quick-Change Rotary Cutter | RTY-2/C

 OLFA 6" x 24" Frosted Acrylic Ruler | QR-6x24

Cutting instructions:

For each of the c1 through c5 colors, cut:

(1) 15 x 5 1/2" strip each

c6 = Cut (1) 18” x 34” rectangle;

c7 = Cut (2) 4 1/2" x WOF and piece them together on the short edge to form a long strip.

        Cut (1) 16” x 27 1/2" rectangle.

Piece the strips c1 though c5 vertically together in the order of your preference. Press seams open.

Align the pieced part on the top of the backing fabric ((c7) 16” x 27 1/2" rectangle) with wrong sides together. The sides and bottom should be bigger by 1 inch for self-binding.

Quilt as desired (no batting needed, or you can use a towel fabric instead of quilting fabric as backing and bind around the front panel with regular quilt binding fabric).

First, fold the bottom edge by 1/2 inch towards the patchwork, press and fold again on top of the patchwork to cover the raw edge, and sew close to the self-binding edge to finish.

Repeat this process on each side to finish.

The top part remains unfinished.

Repeat the same process for the bottom and sides of the base piece of fabric ((c6) 18” x 34” rectangle).

Using the widest stitch length on your sewing machine, with a long thread tail to start and end, sew across the unfinished top side of the patchwork piece 1/2in below the edge. Carefully pull the back thread on each side adjusting towards the center to gather. The overall width should shrink by approximately 1 1/2" on each side.

Fold the top gathered part in half and clip a tiny edge to mark the center, repeat this for the base piece of fabric as well to help aligning both properly.

Align the patchwork part with the base fabric (both facing right sides up) and sew the parts together on the top only.

Pull the gathering threads off and trim all excess threads.

Fold the long tie strip on each short end by 1/4in and press. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and press to crease. Open and fold the long edges by 1/2in and press all along.

Aligning the pieced part of the long strip (where the strips were sewn together (that marks the center)) with the center mark of the apron unfinished edge, enclose the entire top edge and clip along to hide all raw seams. Continue pinning the tie strip along its entire length.

Sew close to the edge to finish the tie and topstitch the opposite side as well to finish and keep the tie flat.

You’re all done!
