This quilted Tic Tac Toe game is a fun, practical project that’s perfect for kids, road trips, or thoughtful handmade gifts. It’s a great scrap buster, using just nine 2.5" squares for the front, and the envelope-style back doubles as a handy pocket to store game pieces. Soft, portable, and endlessly reusable, it’s a creative way to bring a little joy (and quiet entertainment!) wherever you go.

Cut (9) 2.5” squares using your 6.5” x 6.5” square ruler.

Lay out your 9 fabric squares in a 3x3 layout.

Sew rows together using a 1/4" seam allowance.

Press the seams in alternating directions. Press the first row's seams to the right, the second row's seams to the left, and the third row to the right again. This way, when you join the rows together, the seam allowances will "nest" or lock together at each intersection, helping your corners match up cleanly and reducing bulk.

Sew the rows together to form a block, pressing the seams to the side.

Layer backing fabric right side down, batting, then your pieced block, right side up.

Quilt in the ditch along the patchwork seams to accentuate the individual squares and enhance the look of the Tic Tac Toe board.

Trim the quilted panel to 6.5” x 6.5” using your square ruler.

Take your envelope backing fabric and cut the following pieces: (1) 6.5” x  9” and (1) 6.5 x 5”. Fold each piece in half, wrong sides together, so that they still measure 6.5” wide, and press.

Layer the larger folded piece first, then the smaller one on top, aligning all raw edges with the back of the quilted panel. The folded edges will overlap toward the center, creating a pocket-style opening.

Clip or pin the layers in place, then baste around the entire perimeter using a 1/8" seam allowance to hold everything together.

Using your 6” x 24” ruler, cut a piece of binding fabric: (1) 2.25” x 36”. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong side together and press.

Bind the edges of your game board, first attaching the binding to the front, then folding the binding around to the back and finishing by hand or machine.

Congratulations, you did it! You’ve created a fun, functional quilted Tic Tac Toe board complete with built-in storage.

While buttons work great as game pieces, you can get creative with a variety of alternatives. Try hand-cut felt Xs and Os, mini pompoms, colorful bottle caps, small wooden shapes, or even coins. Anything small, portable, and easy to tell apart will do. Have fun personalizing your set!
