Make up this darling patchwork pillow in no time! These darling scrappy tulips will brighten any room and the patchwork borders are the perfect border. This fun pillow is easy to sew and perfect for a beginner or experienced quilter.
Tools, Supplies and Fabric:
- OLFA RTY-2C/STQR NBL Quilting/Sewing Kit
- Basic Quilting Supplies including Sewing Machine and matching thread.
- 1 Sweet Acres 5” stacker for patchwork borders and tulips
- ¼ yard green stripe for flower stems and leaves
- 1/8 yard print for bottom border
- ½ yard background fabric
- ½ yard pillow backing fabric
- ½ yard pillow front lining
- 18” x 30” piece of batting
- 1 ½ yards pom pom trim (optional)
- 1 16” x 26” pillow form
Cutting:
Print Fabrics:
From assorted pink fabrics for tulips: A – Cut 12 pieces 2 1/2” x 2 ½”
From green stripe fabric:
B – Cut 6 pieces 2 ¼” x 2 ½”
C – Cut 2 pieces 1” x 7”
D – Cut 1 piece 1” x 8 ½”
From bottom border print fabric:
E – Cut 1 piece 2 ½” x 18 ½”
From assorted print fabrics:
F – Cut 32 pieces 2 ½” x 2 ½”
Background Fabrics:
G – Cut 24 pieces 1 ½” x 1 ½”
H – Cut 6 pieces 2” x 2 ¼”
I – Cut 4 pieces 2 ¼” x 3 ½”
J – Cut 2 pieces 2 ¼” x 5”
K – Cut 2 pieces 2” x 4 ½”
L – Cut 4 pieces 2” x 12 ½”
M – Cut 1 piece 2 ½” x 18 ½
From fabric for pillow back:
N – Cut 1 piece 16 ½” x 18 ½”
O – Cut 1 piece 16 ½” x 16 ½
Assembly:
- Cut out all pieces for the pillow with your OLFA Rotary Cutter, Mat and Ruler.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the G background pieces. Place one on the top right corner of an A print piece, with the line aligned as shown. Sew on the marked line, trim ¼” away from the seam, and press. Make 12.
- Sew together 4 A/G units, with each of the G background pieces aligned as shown. Unit measures 4 ½” x 4 ½”. Make 3 tulip blocks.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the remaining G background pieces. Place one on the top right corner of a B print piece, aligned as shown. Sew on the marked line, trim ¼” away from the seam, and press. Repeat with another G piece on the bottom left corner. Make 3 left side leaves. Make 3 more with the G pieces on the top left and the bottom right corners, as shown. These are the right side leaves.
- Sew an H background piece to the top side of all of the B/G pieces. Sew and I background piece to the bottom side of two of the left side leaves and to the bottom side of two of the right side leaves. These are the small tulip leaves. Sew a J background piece to the bottom side of the remaining left and right side leaves. This is the large tulip leaves.
- Sew a left and right side leaf unit from the small tulip set on the left and right sides of a C print piece. Make two. Sew a left and right leaf unit from the large tulip leaves on the left and right sides of a D print piece.
- Sew a Tulip Block on the top side of each of the Leaf units. Sew a K background piece on the top side of the small Tulip Blocks.
- Sew together the three tulip blocks with an L background piece between each block and an L piece on the left and right sides. The large tulip block should be in the center.
- Sew an E print piece on the bottom side of the tulip blocks. Sew an M background piece on the top side of the tulip blocks.
- Sew together a row of 8 F background pieces, one on top of each other. Make 4. Sew together two sets. Make 2.
- Sew a Patchwork Row on the left and right sides of the Tulip blocks. This makes the pillow top.
- Quilt pillow top as desired. Sew pom pom trim if using to the edge of the pillow top, so the pom pom trim points in towards the center.
- Hem the right side of the N print piece by turning the edge under twice and stitching just inside the folded edge. Repeat with the left side of the O print piece.
- Overlap the two pieces so the N piece is on the top side of the O piece and the hemmed pieces are in towards the center, and the pieces measure 26” long. Baste the sides where the pieces overlap, 1/8” from the edge.
- Place the envelope back and the pillow front right sides together. Sew around all four sides with a ¼” seam allowance. Clip each corner and turn right side out. Insert pillow form.
