Description: Let’s get creative with a modern look! This easy traditional piecing mini quilt is perfect to go with monochromatic colors + background or go scrappy.

This tutorial provides both colorway fabric requirements and cutting instructions, and full instructions on how to piece.

This mini quilt is based on a 7 x 4 block grid, with 28 blocks total.

Considerations:

(a) Assume 1/4" seam allowance.

(b) FE = fat eighth = 9” x 21”.

(c) Assume 42” WOF for yardage.

Tools needed:

OLFA RM-SG 18”x24” Green Double-Sided, Self-healing Rotary Mat

OLFA 45mm Quick-Change Rotary Cutter (RTY-2C/NBL)

OLFA QR-12S 4 1/2" Square Frosted Acrylic Ruler

OLFA QR-6x24 6”x24” Frosted Acrylic Ruler

Extra material needed:

(1) 24” x 14” quilt batting rectangle of your preference.

Fabric requirements monochromatic + background:

*C1 = light color = 1/3yd = Cut (3) 1 1/2” x WOF strips;

*C2 = dark color = 1/3yd = Cut (3) 1 1/2” x WOF strips;

*C3 = background color = 1/3yd = Cut (3) 1 1/2” x WOF strips;

*C4 = backing fabric = 1/2yd = need a 24” x 14” rectangle;

*C5 = binding = 1/6yd = Cut (2) 2 1/2" x WOF; join them on the 45-degree angle, press lengthwise with right sides out and set aside.

Piece individual 3 sets of C1 + C2 + C3.

Using the QR-12S 4 1/2" Square Frosted Acrylic Ruler, cut (28) 3 1/2” equal squares. Rotate the squares to piece the rows.

Piece the 4 rows following the chart below.

Press all seams open, piece the rows together to finish the quilt top.

Baste, quilt and bind using the method of your preference.

You’re all done! Check the requirement and cutting instructions below to make a scrappy version.

Fabric requirements scrappy + background:

*C1 = (light purple) = (2) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C2 = (dark purple) = (2) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C3 = (light pink) = (5) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C4 = (dark pink) = (5) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C5 = (light orange) = (8) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C6 = (dark orange) = (8) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C7 = (light yellow) = (8) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C8 = (dark yellow) = (8) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C10 = (dark lemon) = (5) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C11 = background = 1 FE = Cut (6) 1 1/2" x WOF strips; Sub cut (28) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2” rectangles;

*C12 = backing fabric = 1/2yd = need a 24” x 14” rectangle;

*C13 = binding = 1/6yd = Cut (2) 2 1/2" x WOF; join them on the 45-degree angle, press lengthwise with right sides out and set aside.

Follow the same steps above to make the blocks and the charts below to piece the rows and top together.
