Make a Turtleneck With Me

Turtlenecks are a quick and easy garment piece to bring together, and they make for very cozy wear in the cooler temps. Follow along below as I create a turtleneck with a truffle shoulder accent using Mood Fabric FREE Turtleneck Pattern .

Tool & Supplies needed:

MOOD Fabric FREE Turtleneck Pattern

Knit Fabric  *yardage based on size,  see pattern*

Invisible elastic

OLFA QR-1x12 1" x 12" Frosted Acrylic Ruler

OLFA RM-MG-01/GRY 24”x36” Double-Sided Self-Healing Rotary Mat, Gray

OLFA 45mm RTY-2/G Straight Handle Rotary Cutter

OLFA 5-Inch SCS-1 Serrated-Edge Stainless Steel Scissors

 

Cutting & Prep

  1. FIrst, print, assemble and cut out your FREE pattern.

  1. Cut all the pieces out for the pattern using your Olfa cutting tools.

  1. Cut two strips of fabric for your ruffle measuring 6 x 28 each. These pieces will be your ruffles.

  1. Fold strip in half and curve and taper off the edges with your cutting tool.
  2. Make sure to transfer any dots, notches or markings from your pattern to your fabric. 

Sewing Instructions

  1. Cut two pieces of invisible stretch elastic the length of your shoulder seams.

  1. With right sides together pin front shoulder seam to back shoulder seam and line up invisible elastic with raw edges.

  1. Stitch and /or serge the shoulder seams through invisible stretch elastic.

  1. Grab your neck piece, with right sides together fold neck piece in half from right to left.
  2. Matching up raw edges and seams pin raw edges

  1. Stitch and/or serge the neck seam,

 

  1. Press seam to one side and with wrong sides together folld neckpiece over, lining up top to bottom raw edges.

  1. With right sides together insert neck piece into shirt collar with raw edges of collar lined up with raw edges of neck piece, making sure back neck seam rests in the middle of back neck.

  1. Pin.

  1. Trim seam.
  2. Stitch and/or serge neckpiece to collar opening.

  1. With wrong sides together fold your ruffle strips in half lengthwise. Pin

  1. Add gathering stitches along the length of the edges from one end to the other.

  1. Using the stitches,gather the ruffle until it won’t gather any more or until you reach your desired ruffle length.

  1. With right sides facing pin ruffle to shoulder opening with raw edges lined up and middle seam lined up to middle of ruffle.
  2. Stitch.

  1. With right sides together pin sleeve into arm opening sandwiching ruffle between sleeve and shirt, with raw edges lined up.

  1. Stitch and/or serge.
  2. Press seam to shoulder.

 

  1. With right sides facing, match arm seams and front and back side seams on both sides. Pin.)
  2. Stitch and/or serge.
  3. Finish arm cuff and shirt hem with either twin needle or single stitch.

 

Voila Your Done!
