A caftan is a summer favorite and there are so many different ways to create this stylish piece. Read below on how I create a color blocked caftan from Vogue Pattern V2021.
Tool & Supplies needed:
2 yards or of main fabric, 2 yards contrasting fabric ( drapey fabrics like chiffon, rayon fabrics suggested)
½ yard interfacing
1- 12” invisible zipper
OLFA RM-MG-01 24" X 36" Green Double-Sided, Self-Healing Rotary
OLFA 45mm RTY-2/C Quick-Change Rotary Cutter, Aqua
OLFA 5-Inch SCS-1 Serrated-Edge Stainless Steel Scissors
OLFA QR-1x12 1" X 12" Frosted Acrylic Ruler
Cutting & Prep
- In order to cut the contrasting piece you will need to measure 8” in from the edge of the sleeve side of pattern piece all the way through to the bottom edge using your OLFA 1” x 12” Acrylic Ruler. You will cut the 8’ edge out of the contrasting color. Don’t forget to add ⅜ inch seam allowance to the cut edge of contrasting side and garment.
- Cut all the pieces out for the pattern using your OLFA cutting tools and apply your interfacing and markings..
Sewing Instructions
- First match your contrasting cut pieces back together at the sleeve and side.
- With right sides facing and raw unnotched edges together Pin and stitch ⅜ seam.
- Finish the seam allowance and press seam toward inside.
- Next, staystitch the neck and sleeve edges of front and back sections.
- With right sides together pin sleeveless side seam together matching notches.
- Stitch seam to about 3” below notch.
- Open invisible zipper and on outside pin right side of zipper face down on right side of zipper opening.
- Using the invisible zipper foot, stitch the zipper close to the zipper coil stopping just below the notch.
- Pin the remaining half of the zipper to the left zipper opening the same way.
- Close the zipper, then stitch the remaining of the seam at the end of the zipper to the seam allowance.
- Cut and finish any excess zipper tape.
- Next,with right sides together, stitch the left shoulder seam.
- Finish seam and press to the back.
- With right sides together stitched notched end of interfaced facing together.
- Finish the unnotched edge and press seam open.
- With right sides together and raw edges lined up pin facing to neck edge.
- Stitch and trim seam.
- Pin the facing to the opening edge and stitch close to the zipper.
- Trim corners and understitch seam to facing.
- Turn facing right side out.
- Tack facing to shoulder seam and press.
- Right sides facing, pin and stitch the left side seam between small and large dot.
- Finish unnotched edge of interfaced sleeve facing.
- Fold sleeve facing in half lengthwise matching the large dot.
- Stitch below the large dot.
- Pin facing to sleeve opening with right sides facing, matching notches.Understitch facing.
- Press sleeve facing under and catchstitch inner edge of facing between seams.
- To finish, apply a narrow hem.
Voila, your caftan is complete!!
