Darts provide the contours and the shape to clothing.  They are used to adjust fit and adhere to the curves and shape of the wearer.  Darts are usually found at the bust or hips of a garment or in places needing fullness or tapering. Sometimes they are used as a design detail to add interest to a fashion piece.

There are to basic types of darts; the single-pointed dart that can be found in the waist of trousers, skirts or in blouses and dresses. Then there is the double-pointed dart mostly used in shaping the bodice. In this blog I will show you how to create each one.

Tools and Materials Needed:

    SINGLE POINTED DART

    1. Measure and mark where you want your dart and how big you want it using your Olfa Ruler and Healing Mat.

*I like to clip notches at the two points of the wider side so that I can match them up evenly.

      1. With right sides together fold the dart lengthwise matching up the points. Press and pin in place.

        1. Stitch along the marked line from the wide end to the top at the point of the dart.

          1. DO NOT BACK STITCH! Instead stitch through the point leaving a long thread at the tip of the dart to tie a knot.

            1. Finally press the dart based on pattern instructions for a neat finish outside and inside.

              DOUBLE POINTED DART

              1. Measure and mark where you want your dart and how big you want it using your Olfa Ruler and Healing Mat.

                1. With right sides together fold the dart lengthwise matching up the points. Press and pin in place.

                  1. With right sides together start stitching from the widest part in the middle out to the point.

                    1. Repeat on other side of double pointed dart making sure stitch through the dart and leave the long thread at each point to tie the knot.

                      5. Press.

                      1. Clip the center or the widest part of the dart to relieve stress off the fabric and prevent it from pulling in the middle.

                        Until Next Time!
