As we gather around the table for Thanksgiving, it's always nice to add a personal touch to the celebration. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a thoughtful and easy-to-make DIY favor—a tea bag holder paired with a hand-sewn felt coaster.
This little project is perfect for decorating your Thanksgiving table and adds a cozy, handmade charm to your gathering.
Plus, it's a versatile gift that you can share with loved ones on any occasion. Whether you're hosting or attending, this simple craft will make everyone feel a little extra special. Let’s start!
Tools & Supplies Needed
- OLFA CM-9x12-01/YEL Double-Sided Self-Healing Cutting Mat
- OLFA QR-6x12 6" x 12" Frosted Acrylic Ruler
- OLFA AK-4 Cushion Grip Art Knife
- OLFA RTY-2DX/MAG 45mm Ergonomic Rotary Cutter paired with SCB45-1 Stainless Steel Scallop Blade, 1pk
- OLFA 7-Inch SCS-2 Serrated-Edge Stainless Steel Scissors
- Patterned Cardstock, letter size (used: Riley Blake Designs Crafting Paper by Lori Holt series, assorted colors)
- Matching Color Plain cardstock, letter size - suitable for printing (used: Champagne Recollections Signature)
- 1/4” double-sided adhesive tape (used: Thermo O Web Tape Runner XL)
- Yarn and needle (used: Riley Blake Designs Chunky Needles and Chunky Thread, assorted colors)
- Floss (used: Aurifil) and embroidery needle
- Felt (two 4x4-inches squares per holder)
- Pencil and eraser
- Erasable ink pen
- Tea Bag
- Printer
- FREE Template
Instructions:
- Print the templates on plain cardstock. Using an OLFA ruler, mat, and art knife, cut out the quote templates (as many as you need) and the leaf, then set the pieces aside.
- Using an OLFA ruler and mat, cut two rectangles from the patterned paper, each measuring 4 inches wide by the length of the letter-size paper you chose for the project. You’ll use one rectangle per tea bag holder, as shown below.
- Score and fold the rectangle into two 4 x 4-inch sections, using the OLFA ruler as a guide.
- Using OLFA ruler and a rotary cutter with a scallop blade, cut a diagonal line across the remaining panel.
- Adhere the vertical side of the diagonal to the square using double-sided tape. Set piece aside. Make as many pouches as you need, set them aside.
- Let’s make the felt coaster! Using the provided template and an erasable ink pen, trace the leaf onto the felt. Then, layer two squares of felt together and cut them out with OLFA scissors, following the shape of the template.
- Hand sew both layers together using half backstitch, using 3 strands of floss in contrasting colors. Hide the beginning and end of the thread between the layers.
Lets put everything together!
- Using a needle and 7 inches of yarn, attach the yarn to the top left corner of the front panel of the tea holder, as shown below:
- Still using the needle, pass both ends of the yarn through the top of the leaf coaster and the top of the tag. Then, tie everything together with a bow.
- Attach the quote to the inside of the tea holder using double-sided tape, and then place the tea bag inside the sleeve.
And your tea bag holder with a coaster is ready!
Don’t forget to tag me @marciabel and @OLFA_craft in your finished project, we would love to see your creation :-) Happy Thanksgiving!
