Slice & Stitch Challenge – September 2020

The weather is cooling off and fall is in the air. That must mean it is time for another edition of the 2020 Slice & Stitch Challenge.

For these challenges, we’ve partnered with our friends at Aurifil to bring six months of inspiration and project ideas to you. For each challenge, one OLFA Creator and one Aurifil Artisan will receive the same products to create a unique project or tip/tutorial to share. Additionally, Michael Miller Fabrics is supplying solids from their Cotton Couture line.

This month OLFA Creator Amista Baker and Aurifil Artisan Shannon Fraser each received:

  • Product: OLFA Rulers
  • Thread: Aurifil Color Builder Collection AMALFI  (OLFA Creator) or SICILY (Aurifil Artisan)
  • Fabric: Cotton Couture Solids in Opal, Lavendar, and Jam to coordinate with AMALFI and Candlelight, Lemon, and Marigold to match SICILY

Hello and welcome to the OLFA Creates blog! My name is Amista Baker and I am the OLFA Creator featured for this month’s Slice and Stitch Challenge.

The September Slice & Stitch Challenge theme is Fall. While most people wouldn’t necessarily see purple as much of a “fall” color… it does remind me of cool fall nights, beautiful deep purple sunsets, and falling stars. Purple also just so happens to be my very favorite color!

My project is a falling star pillow featuring the Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids bundle in the shades Opal, Lavender, and Jam. I also mixed in some prints and basics from my stash to supplement and make it all a little more fun.

I made a single block from the Starstream Quilt pattern by Sally Davies and free motion quilted it with 50-weight Aurifil Thread from the Amalfi Purple Color Builders set that was provided to me.

You can find the pattern I used here: https://payhip.com/b/DI7U

I am not at all a FMQ expert, but I did have fun making swirls, clouds, and outlining the butterflies in the center of the stars as I worked my way across the pillow top.

As always, I used my most favorite OLFA products during the process:  the 45mm Purple OLFA Quick-Change Rotary Cutter, 6 ½” x 12” Frosted Advantage Acrylic Ruler, and my 24” x 36” Translucent Cutting Mat.

I really love some of the little details from this project and can’t wait to showcase this new quilted pillow in my sewing room. I hope you enjoyed it as well. Be sure to check out the other Slice & Stitch challenge posts this year.

Stay safe friends!
