Project: Quarter-Square Triangle Double-Sided Quilted Pillow 20” x 20”

Hello fellow creators! I’m Shayla Wolf, one half of the Sassafras Lane Designs duo, and today I am sharing a fun Double-sided Quilted Pillow featuring quarter-square triangles. I love colorful, geometric and fun project designs and the best way to create these is with OLFA products. I grew up learning to sew with rotary cutters and cutting mats from the very beginning and will always continue to! Let’s get started!

Supplies Needed:

  • OLFA 12” x 12” Rotating Cutting Mat
  • OLFA 4.5” Square Acrylic Ruler
  • OLFA Pink Splash Rotary Cutter
  • (25) 5.5” x 5.5” of Assorted Colorful Fabrics
  • (25) 5.5” x 5.5” of Assorted Low Volume Fabrics
  • 20” Invisible Zipper
  • Marking Pencil/Pen
  • (2) 20.5” x 20.5” Fusible Fleece
  • 50wt Thread for Piecing & Quilting
  • Quarter Inch Foot
  • Invisible Zipper Foot
  • 20” x 20” Pillow Form

Pair a Colorful square with a Low Volume square.

Layer the the squares right sides together and draw line diagonally from one corner to another.

Sew 1/4” on either side of the of the drawn line and cut along the center drawn line.

Press the seams toward the Colorful halves. Yield two half-square triangles.

Layer the two half-square triangles right sides together, nestling the seams against one another.

Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner across the seams.

Sew 1/4” on either side of the of the drawn line and cut along the center drawn line.

Press the seams open.

Using the OLFA 4.5” Square Acrylic Ruler and OLFA 12” x 12” Rotating Cutting Mat, trim the quarter-square triangles down to 4.5” squares. Trimming the quarter-square triangles down is super fast with the rotating mat!

Yield two 4.5” quarter-square triangles.

Repeat for the remaining 24 Colorful and Low Volume squares, yielding a total of 50 quarter-square triangles (two of each color).

Layout the quarter-square triangles into 5 rows of 5 in rainbow order (or however you would like!) rotating every other one as shown.

Sew the quarter-square triangles into 5 rows. Press the seams towards the colorful fabrics.

Sew the rows together, nestling the seams. Press the row seams open. Make 2.

Fuse the 20” x 20” fusible fleece to the back sides of your pieced quarter-square triangles and quilt the pillow tops. I quilted straight lines ¼” on each side of the diagonal seams.

Find the centers of the bottoms of both pillow covers and mark on the front side. Find the center of the zipper and mark on both sides.

Unzip the zipper and pin one side to the a pillow cover, with the teeth facing up and the centers aligned.

Mark 1.5” in from each end. This is where you will stop and start sewing.

Attach your Invisible Zipper Foot and sew the first side of the zipper to one of the pillow forms, back-stitching at the beginning and end to secure.

Arrange the other side of the zipper to the right side of the second pillow cover with the teeth up.

Align the marked centers and pin in place.

Sew the zipper to the pillow, starting and and stopping at the 1.5” marks and backstitching at the ends to secure. Zip the zipper about 2/3rds of the way. Don’t forget this step or you won’t be able to turn the pillow!

Align the pillow covers right sides together. Pull the zipper ends out of the pillow and pin in place.

Switch back to your ¼” foot and sew the pillow covers together along the outside edge starting and stopping as close to where the zipper ends pop out as you can. Back stitch to secure at both the beginning and end. Trim the corners with your OLFA Scissors.

Turn the pillow through the open 1/3rd of the pillow and push the corners out to a point. Stuff your 20” pillow form into the pillow and zip it closed. Voila!
