About California Prop 65

California Proposition 65 is a law that is intended to protect citizens of California from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens about exposures to such chemicals. (Source: http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65.html) Proposition 65 is focused on the content of regulated products sold in California. Whether or not a product contains a listed chemical has no bearing on the safety of the product when used properly.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to clearly label products that may contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The list contains a wide range of almost 1,000 naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals. As of August 30, the required warnings under California Proposition 65 will change to incorporate additional information. Product produced and packaged prior to this date are not required to reflect this new warning.

Beginning August 8, 2018, all of the OLFA products listed above shipping from the California regional distribution center are labeled with one of the required caution statements. The warning label is only required in California, not in any other states.

Q: Are OLFA products safe?

A: Under California’s Prop 65, we are obligated to inform the consumer of the presence of even trace amounts of chemicals that they have identified as being harmful. When used properly, OLFA products pose no significant risk.

Many cutting mats and tools on the market already contain this warning. However, what we would like to point out is that whether or not a product contains a listed chemical has no bearing on the safety of the product when used properly.

  • The correct usage of a cutting mat is placed on a flat, non-heated, stable surface when cutting fabric, paper or other materials. The cutting mat is meant to protect your work surface from being damaged or cut, and also helps to extend the life of your blade.
  • The correct usage of rotary cutting tools is to apply gentle even pressure to the rotary cutter handle as you roll forward, away from your body using a ruler as your guide. Always place a protective covering on work surface before cutting.
  • The correct usage for cutters is to handle with care and wear safety gloves and goggles.

Anticipated additional consumer questions and suggested responses:

A: Fabrics or other materials cut on the mat will not be impacted.
