Mother's Apron

Mother's Apron
Print Print or download Project Sheet (PDF)

by Sheila Reinke
Whether Mom is a crafter, a cook, or prefers to garden, there is always a time that she'd like to protect her clothing from the stains of the current project. This apron is a fun and practical way to say 'thanks' for all the many projects she has helped you with over the years.

Please note, images used in this pattern are NOT to scale

Pattern can be reproduced for personal (not for sale) use.

  • 1 1/2 yards of sportswear or drapery fabric (apron)
  • Assorted scraps of calico prints for appliques and flower yo-yos
  • 1/4 yard of fusible web for appliqués
  • Thread to match
  • Standard sewing supplies
Instructions
  1. Top of apron bib 10" across - Apron at waist 25" wide - Length 33" top to bottom before hemming
  2. Use a 1/4" hem for apron sides.
  3. Turn hem at bottom twice (1" each time) before stitching to provide some extra weight at the bottom
  4. Cut straps on the bias 3" wide, fold the 3" width in half to make a 1/2" tape, then fold each side folded into the center making a 3/4" bias tape.
  5. Bias tape was made 96" long, and used in one piece to make the ties, go up each side to the neck, and for the top of the bib (see red line in image at right). Use bias mark on OLFA cutting mat as a guide.

  7. Cut flower yo-yos, 2 small (4" diameter), and one large (5 1/2" diameter), using the OFLA circle cutter to get a perfect circle.
  8. Cut applique letters and leaves (pattern included in separate file titled "Mom Apron Letters", use fusible web as directed on packaging.
  9. Add flower yo-yos, leaves and lettering.
